Project - 1

Aim: To determine the thickness of a glass strip in a spherometer.

Apparatus: Spherometer, glass strip, glass slab and a half meter rod.

Observations: L.C =                        Pitch                                           

No. of division on circular scale =
1 ÷ 100 = 0.01 mm

Total no. of division on the circular scale = 100

Pitch: Distance moved by the screw on main scale ÷ no. of complete rotation.

  1. Main scale is in mm.
  2. Three legs of spherometer are equi-distance.

Precautions:
(1) Always rotate the screw in the same direction so as to avoid error due to backlash of the screw.
(2) At least three readings should be taken at different places of glass strip.

 

Pitch: Distance moved by screw on main scale ÷ no. of complete rotation.

Project - 2

Aim: To determine and verify the time period of simple pendulum.

Apparatus: Bob, thread, stand, stopwatch and meter scale.

Observation:
Least count of stopwatch = 1 sec
Mean time = 79.35 sec

Time taken to complete one vibration =

L₁ = 70 cm
L₂ = 75 cm
L₃ = 80 cm

Lᵦ = 2.6 mm
r = 3.5 = 1.75 cm

=2×22774.35980[where g = 980 cm/s²]
447×0.275=1.73 sec


Calculation: Verification of time period
Length of the string = 2.6 mm

Acceleration due to gravity = 980 cm/sec²

Time period of simple pendulum:

T=2πlg

Result:
Time period of simple pendulum = 1.73 sec


Precautions:

  1. The required conditions of an ideal simple pendulum cannot be realized in actual practice, which will be weightless and inextensible.
  2. The motion of the pendulum should be in a single vertical plane only.
